Nowadays,
breast augmentation is counted among the most requested and performed plastic surgeries worldwide. It is a relatively easy procedure; it does not generally present any post-operative risks; and it culminates in concrete results. Although physical activity is resumed rapidly after breast augmentation surgery, the patient has to wait for several months before resuming sports on a regular basis.
When to resume sports after breast augmentation surgery?
Resuming sports can be solely considered starting from the fourth month after surgery. During recovery period, the patient has to avoid strenuous physical effort and has to rest well. Resuming regular sporting activity should be done progressively and upon the surgeon’s approval.
Which breast implants to choose if you exercise regularly?
You are generally free to choose whatever shape or size of implants that you desire. However, if you will be exercising regularly after the surgery, big implants are a no go. In addition, implants are not to be inserted under the muscles as the latter may cause implant displacement with the performance of certain workouts; like chest workouts to build pectoral muscles.
Therefore, patients who plan to resume regular physical exercising after breast implantation are advised to undergo a subglandular implant placement. Round implants are also adequate for any type of sporting activity.
Are breast implants uncomfortable when exercising?
Breast implants neither cause discomfort nor pain during sporting activities. You may resume sports progressively and upon the surgeon’s approval. If you have healed properly, you may resume your favourite sporting activity at your own pace. However, if you feel any discomfort or pain in your breasts, you are recommended to stop exercising and immediately consult your doctor.
Which sports to practise after breast augmentation surgery?
Sports that are allowed to practise starting from the fourth month after surgery are brisk walking, stationary biking, or other gymnastic exercises that specifically focus on legs and the abdomen.
The patient is able to resume any other sporting activity three months after the procedure (if she opted for round implants).
What sporting activities to avoid after breast augmentation surgery?
You should be careful of pushing yourself too hard when building pectoral muscles (especially when bodybuilding) because the latter might engender implant displacement. If you have opted for anatomic prostheses, they may move or rotate with the rapid resumption of contact sports or with the performance of sudden movements. Therefore, the patient has to wait for five or six months before resuming such sporting activities like swimming, football, or basketball.
The importance of pre-operative consultation
It is important to discuss with your surgeon your expectations and life choices after the surgery (resumption of sports, pregnancy, strenuous work activity, etc.). The latter discussion will help your surgeon in recommending the most adequate implants for you. In addition, s/he will give you some advice in order not to alter the results of the procedure in the future.
